Hello to all of our friends, welcome to CDRC’s 5th monthly newsletter.

Housing 101 - CDRC will be assisting members to participate in the latest housing seminars being offered by Sharon Brent and the National Disabilities Institute. The Institute will be hosting 4 regional seminars entitled Housing 101. Some of the topics to be discussed include: Availability of Housing Options, Financial Resources for Making Housing Affordable, and Financial Resources for Accessibility Adaptations. CDRC has had involvement with Sharon and the Institute for a little while now and knows that they really know their stuff. If housing is an important issue for you, please try to attend a session in your area. Additional info. is available at the bottom of our home page www.thecdrc.org

Employment Services – CDRC will also be assisting members to participate in Focus Groups for People With Disabilities on Employment Services in Maryland hosted by Independence Now. IN will host 4 regional focus groups throughout the month of June. Topics for discussion include: What can state government do to encourage employment opportunities for persons with disabilities and How can public agencies better assist you with employment and your career? If you’ve had trouble with getting a job you like through DORS or other agencies supposedly set-up to help us, this is your chance to give your 2 cents. This info. is also available on our website www.thecdrc.org

Legislator Home Visits - We have resumed scheduling legislators to visit CDRC members in their homes to discuss community living and supports. Our next home visit will be Delegate Keith Haynes. Delegate Haynes will drop in on Will Fields who resides in the 44th District which Haynes represents. Another Legislator home visit is scheduled for early July. We are still working on scheduling others. We want to educate the Legislators on community living, and to show them that with the proper supports, EVERYONE can live in the community.  We feel this is an important step in getting Legislators to learn what it means for an individual to live in the community, and how important it is for that individual to have the necessary supports in order to lead a productive life.

Outreach Galore - We had a great visit with People On the Go of Southern Maryland in Waldorf and with the residents of Claibourne House in Annapolis last month. The turn-out in Waldorf was excellent. Thanks to CDRC member David Shields and Arc of Southern Maryland support staff Linda Clem for having us. You can see a photo of the group on our website in the “Photos” section.  We also visited People Power in Harford County on May 24th. Hello to Geoff and Richard from that group. Thanks for inviting us Art. We’ll come back whenever you’re ready for us. Our next outreach is scheduled for June 9th with the Self Advocacy Group of Carroll County. More coming soon as the CDRC Summer Outreach Tour continues. If you would like CDRC to come and speak to your self advocacy group or support service, please call Little John at 410-571-9320 or 410-974-6139.
