Hello to all of our friends.  We hope that you are having a great summer.  In this edition we will be talking about all of CDRC’s goings-on for the month of July.

John’s update

I am happy to say that CDRC Co-Leader, John has started to work part time from home.  He is still having physical therapy daily and needs some more recouperation time.  He is improving every day.  John will start working in the office one day a week starting in August, and should be back to his regular schedule by the end of August.  CDRC will be glad to have John back.

Federal Monitoring Team

The Federal Government branch that funds: 1) The DD Council (they are the people that fund the CDRC); 2) The Maryland Disability Law Center (MDLC) (They are good friends and valuable support to CDRC), and 3) The Kennedy Krieger Institute came to Maryland to interview advocates to make sure these three organizations are doing their jobs of supporting and representing the disability community.  They interviewed Kenny regarding his internship with Senator Grosfeld which is supported by DD Council funds.  The team also interviewed CDRC and its Board Of Leadership (BOL), to make sure that the DD Council are support grants and advocacy efforts to better the disability community.  The team that oversees the Maryland Disability Law Center (MDLC) interviewed members from CDRC to ensure that MDLC is doing their job in serving the disability community as well.  We feel all of the interviews that CDRC participated in went very well.  And we look forward to continuing our relationships with the DD Council and MDLC.

State Plan

CDRC members and Sun Shine Folk, Sarah and Kenny have been working hard on the Maryland Department of Disabilities State Plan for 2007 through their work with the Commission On Disabilities. The 7 domains in the State Plan are, Community Integration, Education, Emergency Preparedness, Employment, Family Supports, Technology, and Transportation.  The Commission developed a consumer friendly (easy to use) booklet of the State Plan that makes it easier for the consumer to read and understand.  We will be happy to send you a copy of the consumer friendly booklet as soon as we receive it.  The new State Plan should be out October 1st.

 CDRC Continuation Funding

As you know, CDRC hired someone (a grant writer) to help us find $$$$ so that we can continue our hard work on state policy and legal issues that effect persons with disabilities. Threw her efforts, CDRC has been asked to submit a proposal to a major foundation for support funding.  The final proposal is due to them by August 1st.  We sent a draft proposal to the foundation July 21st to get feedback from them as to what changes might be needed before the final proposal had to be in August 1st.  We have been very busy working on that.
